Important Question:
What if you knew you only had one day left to live?
That day is tomorrow.
Would you do anything differently? Who would you visit or call? Let’s apply the same premise to your profession as a teacher: if you had to teach tomorrow "your last day on earth"what would you do differently? Would you treat everyone at school the same as usual-students, teachers, administrators, staff-as if it were just another day? How would you want these people to remember you on your last day?
If your thinking and behavior would change for the better because it’s your last day, then why not change. . .right now! Don’t put off beginning your journey of success.
A painfully shy man once fell deeply in love with a young woman. He sensed she felt the same way, but he couldn’t find the courage to ask her out for a date. Finally, he decided he would mail her a love letter every day for one year, and then ask her out for a date.
He faithfully followed his plan, and at the end of the year he drummed up the courage to call her only to find out she had married the mailman! Don’t procrastinate! Procrastination if one of the leading killers of success.
To benefit most from this book, you will need to do more than just read it. I’m going to ask you to do this book. Your new journey of success begins with your honest, personal affirmation of your decision to change and get more out of life than you’re currently getting. Please complete the Success Activities, and don’t hesitate to underline or highlight any important points or quotes.
First of all, let’s agree to what I refer to as the 3 Gottas. Please rewrite each statement on the line following it to affirm your decision to change.
I gotta. . .be open to new possibilities
I gotta. . .be committed to action!
I gotta. . .break out of my comfort zone!
My apology if you are an English teacher. I am well aware that gotta is slang and the word burst is more appropriate than bust, but I will take advantage of writer’s freedom. Also, I write on the seventh grade, third month level. . .so school administrators and college professors can understand what I am trying to say. Just kidding! I’m appreciative and thankful for school administrators’ sense of humor especially those in the school divisions where I’ve enjoyed the privilege of teaching.
I love the following story. A school administrator shared it with me:
A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, "Can you help me? I promised a friend I’d meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am."
The woman replied, "You’re in a hot air balloon hovering about 30 feet above the ground, between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude, and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude."
"You must be a teacher," said the balloonist. "I am," replied the women, "but how did you know?"
"Well," answered the man, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is, I’m still lost. Frankly, you haven’t been much help to me so far."
The teacher responded, "You must be a school administrator." "I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know that?" "Well," said the woman, "you don’t know where you are or where you are going. You have risen to where you are due to a lot of hot air. You made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect ME to solve your problem. The fact is, sir, you’re in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow it’s MY fault.
