Teachers are real people, too-almost.

During my first year of teaching one of my students saw me push-ing my cart through the grocery store. After scanning the cart contents, full of the junk food items of my typical shopping spree- Dr. Pepper, doughnuts, chips and dip, and three half-gallons of ice cream- she exclaimed, "Wow, Mr. King, I guess teachers are real people, too- almost." As a teacher, standing in front of your class, did it ever occur to you that many of your students don’t even consider you a real human being?

I speak and present at many educator conferences and in-service training programs throughout the country. I’ve rarely observed any training that equips teachers to experience a successful personal life. As a teacher, you’ll experience success in the classroom only if you experience success outside the classroom.

As often as educators try to separate the two, it’s impossible to do. I’ve read the same book you have, telling us to leave our personal problems at home. That’s one of those concepts that looks good on paper, but just won’t work in the real world of teaching. If you’re stressed out about a relationship or situation in your personal life, can it affect your performance in the classroom? Of course it can, and it will control you if you allow it to. Strategy #3 for Highly Successful Teachers specifically deals with how you can successfully manage teacher stress and burnout.

The first three strategies directly pertain to your personal life. To include only classroom strategies would be unfair to you and your students. For you to experience success at school, you must first be successful in your personal life beginning with improving your selfimage.

Successful people become successful teachers!

This book has absolutely no value to you unless you apply the strategies, not just read them. Even the number one success book in the world, the Bible, will not change you until you practice its powerful success principles.

Halloween is over. You can take your mask off.

How many times have you heard that statement from students the day after Halloween? (Actually, they say it to me all year). These success strategies will make a positive difference in your life only to the extent you apply them and are honest with yourself. This is not Halloween. No masks allowed. When you discover the truth about yourself, you’ll experience more energy and enthusiasm than you ever imagined possible, both in the classroom and at home!
